Eileen Armstrong
Saturday, January 24, 1914 - Monday, August 15, 2005

Birthplace: Toronto, Ontario

Mrs. Eileen Elizabeth Armstrong (nee Dorman) of Glacier Ridge Retirement Home passed away peacefully on Monday August 15th, 2005 with family close by. Born in Toronto, Ontario on January 24th 1914, Eileen spent her youth and school years there, graduating from University of Toronto with a degree in languages. She met and married her husband of 48 years John Albert Armstrong moving with him to Montreal, PQ, and Ottawa during the war years. They settled in Thunder Bay in 1951. Since arriving in Thunder Bay, Eileen and John were active supporters of life at St. John’s Anglican Church. Together they expanded a cottage at East Loon Lake to create a summer residence for their children and grandchildren to enjoy. Upon her husband opening his own business she showed her indomitable spirit and support by returning to University of Toronto attaining her teaching certificate. Eileen spent 10 enjoyable years teaching French and Latin at Port Arthur Collegiate Institute and it always brought her great joy to see her former students. Eileen will be sadly missed by her daughter Georgina Adderley and husband Bruce of Thunder Bay, son John Armstrong and wife Carolyn of Calgary, AB, granddaughter Roberta Adderley and husband James, and grandson Sean Adderley of Thunder Bay, grandchildren Laura and Lucas Armstrong of Calgary, AB. Great grandchildren Alyssa Adderley and Christopher St.Cyr will lovingly remember their G.G. and the precious time spent with her. Several cousins and their families in Canada, the USA and Ireland also share in our loss. Eileen’s close friends in Thunder Bay will fondly miss her; we thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Eileen was predeceased by her husband John in 1989 and by her parents William and Georgina Dorman and sister Dorothy. John and his family are enroute from Calgary to share in a celebration of Mom's life. From many miles away they brought strength to Eileen. Georgina showed great strength and courage in helping Mom through this difficult time, standing by her daily. The family thanks you, Georgina, for making her journey dignified and peaceful. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the care provided to Eileen by Dr. J.T. Colquhoun and the loving staff of Glacier Ridge. A Memorial service will be held on Friday, August 19, 2005 at 11:00 a.m., when family and friends will gather at St. John’s Anglican Church (Pearl Street) with the Rev. Paul Walmsley officiating. Interment of ashes at Sunset Memorial Gardens will follow the reception. Should friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, a donation to St. John’s Anglican Church, c/o 226 Pearl Street, Thunder Bay, P7B 1E4 or The Thunder Bay Humane Society would be appreciated.
