Mr. John Irwin (Johnnie/Jack) Kay, age 84 years a resident of Pioneer Ridge, passed away at St. Joseph's Hospice Unit on Sunday, Nov 14, 2004. John was born in Eston, Saskatchewan on June 29, 1920. He left home and came to Port Arthur, ON in 1940 to join the navy during World War 11. During the war, while stationed in St. John's, NFLD., he met his soul mate Ella Reid. He was transfered to Halifax, N.S., where Ella joined him and they were married on June 8, 1943. During his naval service, he saw active duty on the H.M.S. "Mayflower" and the H.M.S. "Nene". As a veteran, he was later awarded a medal for serving in the Murmansk Convoy Service to the Northern Russian Port, providing food, fuel and military supplies for two years. Following the war, John, Ella and daughter Shirley settled in Port Arthur. He worked for Marshall Wells for two years and then was employed by Thunder Bay Telephone for 38 years, taking early retirement in 1985 due to ill health. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #5, serving as Sergeant At Arms and their color party. His interests included bowling, curling, fishing, camping and most of all family get-togethers. He went to several naval reunions with his comrades from the H.M.S. "Nene". John enjoyed oil painting, wood working and burning. He was also a strong advocate for organ donation. Predeceased by his parents Edmond and Laura Kay and sisters Eunice and Marion. He is survived by his loving wife Ella, whom he shared 61 years of marriage, daughters Shirley Kay, Barbara (John) Young, son Reid (Lois) Kay, proud grandfather of Sean and Scott (Monica) Kay, Shannon and Jennifer Young, 2 great granddaughters Macleary Young and Madison Kay, sister Inez (Lyle) Hyde and his longtime canine companion Beauty. Dad will be forever remembered for his smile and joking manner and his "baby blues". Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service to celebrate and honour his life, will be held on Saturday, November 20th when family and friends will gather at the Royal Canadian Legion, Port Arthur Branch #5, 229 Van Norman Street for services at 2:00p.m., with Archdeacon Mark S. Conliffe officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Port Arthur Branch #5 Building Fund or to the Thunder Bay Naval Heritage Fund.
