LEITRANTS- Mrs. Anna Leitrants died at St. Joseph's Hospice on Friday, February 3, 2006 at age 92 years. Formerly a resident of the Toronto area, she moved to Thunder Bay in 1990 after the death of her husband. She was originally born in Zemgale, Latvia on January 18, 1914. She arrived in Canada in 1947 as a displaced person. Anna met and married her husband Peteris also of Latvian descent in November of 1949 and on July 29, 1953 they were blessed with the birth of their only son Peter. Their son Peter was their greatest pride and joy, and obtained his medical doctorate with subspecialty in gastroenterology in 1984. He was a practicing physician in Thunder Bay until his death in 2001. Mom made Thunder Bay her home in her later years to be close to her son and daughter-in-law, and then her two grandsons Colin and Cameron. She herself had worked in various jobs, the longest being at the Canadian General Insurance Co. in Scarborough as a bookkeeper/clerical staff. With her husband, they bought a farm in Enniskillen, Ontario where they tended to 400 fruit trees, 3 steers, honey bees and a large vegetable garden. Mom loved to travel and visited various destinations including Sweden, Germany, Italy, Greece, Britain, Alaska, Ireland, California, Florida, Venezuela and Hawaii. She loved classical music, operas and the theatre. She loved the farm life and nature. She was a member of the Latvian Cultural society and had many wonderful friends and neighbors in Toronto. She was a bright, well read, articulate person and was fluent in Latvian, German and English. She was an avid reader of historical books and politically aware of current events. Mom could be described as a consumate "lady" of the highest degree. In her last days she asked me to relay her extreme gratefulness to the Canadian Government for the "good life" she experienced in Canada. She was overwhelmed how even costly biological drugs such as Embrille would be funded for Canadian Citizens. Over the past years and during her last days she received such wonderful care from many physicians and medical personnel including the Spence Clinic Staff , Dr. Humphries, Dr. Franchi, Dr. Czarnecki, Dr. Cullinan, Dr. Fidler, Dr. Davis, Comcare nurses especially Joanne and in her last days the nurses and staff of the St. Joseph's Hospice Unit and for this she and her family are eternally grateful. Also our deepest thanks to Shelly and the staff at Glacier Ridge Retirement Home as you made Mom's final years so very pleasant. She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her daughter-in-law Lisa Rozenbergs and her grandsons Colin and Cameron as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Anna was predeceased by her husband Peter, son Dr. Peter Leitrants, mother Marie Bolands, father Gustav Bolands, brothers Leo and Werner and sister Elizabeth. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 5th at 6:30 p.m. in the Sargent & Son Funeral Chapel, 21 N. Court Street, with Rev. J.P. Schmidt officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in York Cemetery in Toronto. Visitation for friends will be from 7-8 p.m. on Saturday in the Sargent & Son Chapel. In lieu of flowers memorials to the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com. Anna has gone to be with God and her loved ones.
